The Diving

Raja Ampat has over 700 species of mollusks and 1,200 species of fish. Counted among those is the newly discovered 'walking' epaulette shark, commonly seen on night dives on the house reef.

Thanks to their extremely remote location, MER are able to offer the variety and quality of live aboard diving combined with all the comforts of a land-based holiday resort. The diversity of Raja Ampat's underwater topography is simply astounding, with all manner of reef systems.

Visibility is generally 25+ meters, with temperatures around 26-28 degrees Celsius (78-82 degrees Fahrenheit). You can expect to dive a wide selection of coral covered walls, reef flats, caves and swim through’s, gentle sea mounts, placid lagoons, and current-raked pinnacles, and expect regular visits from the graceful manta rays that frequent these waters.

MER have explored over 60 dive sites within a one-hour boat ride from the dive resort, and there are many more waiting to be explored. They are pleased to offer you 20 world-class dive sites within a 10 minute ride from the resort.

Some of the more famous dive sites (all within the 425 sq km Marine Protected Area established in 2006) include Fiabacet, Boo, Magic Mountain, Yilliet, and Gorgonian Passage.

Misool Eco Resort’s Dive Center is located in the North Bay, built on stilts over the water. It’s spacious and airy, with dedicated wet and dry areas to suit professional videographers, photographers and recreational divers alike. There’s also a sunny veranda, perfect for drying out between dives and taking in the topside views.

The Accommodation

Water Cottages: Misool’s eight Water Cottages, Dive Centre, restaurant, walkways, and staff accommodation were built from reclaimed tropical hardwood. They have sourced driftwood and naturally fallen timbers, then milled each and every piece of lumber themselves in their portable sawmill. Aside from the clear advantages of eco-friendly building practices, this allowed them to create a remarkably consistent aesthetic with an undeviating standard of quality. All the furniture and fittings (including wardrobes, shelving, tables, beds, doors, door handles...) were hand-crafted on site from recycled wood by the team of resident Javanese artisans and their local apprentices.

Misool Eco Resort offers two levels of accommodation. There’s the eight Water Cottages, located in the North Lagoon, built on stilts over the water. They're just steps from the Dive Centre and restaurant. Stairs lead from your private veranda down into the placid lagoon, and the House Reef is about 100 fin-kicks away.

We also have one deluxe villa, Villa Tabisasu, located on the eastern edge of the North Lagoon.

Villa Tabisasu: The Villa Tabisasu is the first deluxe villa in the Misool Eco Resort. If you want to experience the most special of the extraordinary, then look no further. Because of its unique location it offers the perfect retreat, hidden away and intimate. At the same time the villa is ideally integrated into the resort, so that all public areas are in immediate reach.

The Villa is the only building of the resort facing east, which is situated on the ridge of the reef. This offers you the exclusive possibility to experience breathtaking sunsets from your own outside bed. From the spacious terrace you can enjoy the sheer incredible variety of marine life, like Napoleon Wrasse, Bumphead Parrotfish, Turtles, Dolphins and sometimes even Wobbegongs, while you sip on your freshly pressed mango juice. At night you are offered the spectacle of the clear starry heavens meeting the horizon of the dark sea which itself glitters like stars with its fluorescent marine life and plankton.

Not only the space and the situation of the villa, but as well the customer service allows you to experience 'la dolce vita'. Take your breakfast undisturbed on the terrace, the service personnel looks after you all the time. Villa Tabisasu offers you a wide range of Indonesian coffee specialities or an international selection of different teas which are always available. We wish you an unforgettable holiday, in the choicest surroundings!

REEFsponsible activities

When we first came up with the concept for our company, Misool Eco Resort were one of the first to come to mind. We consider them Industry leaders and a shining example for anyone involved in adventure tourism.

Working together with the local community to provide outstanding dive holidays, whilst helping to protect the local environment and directly improving the local economy.

Here’s some of what they do:

Ranger Patrol

The Rangers have patrolled their 425 km (NTZ) since 2006. In this area, it is prohibited to remove anything from the sea, including fish, shark fins, shells, turtles, and turtle eggs.

Thanks to funding from Wild Aid, The Coral Reef Alliance, Precious Planet, and many generous private donors, the Rangers now have a dedicated speed boat.

Staffed primarily by Yellu residents Jainudin Bahale, Mohammed Loji, and Rajak Tahmer, they have a regular biweekly patrolling schedule. They also interact with liveaboards visiting our No-Take Zone, informing them about our NTZ as well as reinforcing the Operator's Code of Conduct, which prohibits boats from anchoring less than 60 metres from the reef, tying off on the reef, and dumping rubbish on the beaches. The patrol is active 24 hours a day, and will approach any suspicious boats on the horizon. They work in close cooperation with the local police department.

Djabatan school project

The village of Yellu, which means 'Two Mountains' in the local Misool language, straddles a tiny strip of sandy land between two mountains. Yellu has expanded so that most of the houses are now built on stilts over the reef. A group of families has moved to a neighbouring island and started a new village called Djabatan. Unfortunately, the local government has failed to fund the village school. The 52 children in Djabatan are attending a make-shift primary school located in a village head's office.

Misool Conservation Centre supports two of the school teachers at the Djabatan School. Our friends Rachel Wigglesworth and Will Hutton have very kindly sponsored one of the school teacher's salaries for an entire year. Cecilia and Hugh Ross have also made a generous contribution, which has been used to purchase books and materials for the school.

Rajak, one of the Rangers, has just returned from a two month capacity building experience in Bali where he worked together with CORAL and Reef Check. One of the ideas Rajak developed together with CORAL's Naneng Setiasih was to create a 'Floating Library.' The idea is very simple - our Ranger Patrol will provide the transport, and once every two weeks will bring desperately needed books to the schools. Regular users will be issued library cards.

Reef restoration project

In April of 2007, we initiated our first community Reef Restoration Project. Together with representatives from the local communities of Yellu and Fafanlap, we sank an iron framework just north of our jetty. One and a half years later, it's covered in soft corals and provides a great hiding place for reef fish.
